THE THEME OF THE MONTH: "Keeping
Alve"
1. At the beginning of this month we are
experiencing extraordinary amounts of rain fall. But
as the month goes on and the temperatures rise, as
they are predicted to do, make sure to check
moisture and water when we get less than 1" of rain
per week. Not sure? Think about getting a rain
gauge at the Garden Center. Stick you finger down
in the soil about 1-2". If it is not moist, water.
2. Fertilize every two weeks or so if using liquid all
purpose fertilizer or a Rose food. If using slow
release granules, follow the label instructions.
3. If you haven't already done so, finish Mulching to
keep down weeds and retain moisture. Hard wood
bark or leaf mold is good. But there are many
others. Sawdust is bad because it draws nitrogen
from the soil.
5. If you spray, begin your spray program. When it
is cool, a dormant "light horticultural" oil is a good
preventive spray. Show judges remind us that this
material should not be used close to a show if you
plan to enter roses. The gloss left on the leaves
could be considered a foreign substance and
cause the entry to be disqualified. If you are a
experienced grower, follow your established
program. If you are new, call one of the Consulting
Rosarians (follow this link for the list) in your area
for advice.
6. The Mini Rose show and Picnic for 2008 will be
held July 20, 2008. Check the Events Calendar for
more information. There is also more information
on showing at the ARS website.
7. Keep planning for the future. Check our Nursery
and Garden Center's Clearance sales. You may
get that rose you always wanted at a deep
discount. You can see some of the new
introductions of roses for 2008 at our "New
Introductions for 2008" page. One tip here. Many
mail order nurseries list "New for 2008" but this
does always mean that the rose is new to the US
market. It more often means it is new to their
catalogue. If you are really looking for a totally new
rose, check the name in the "Handbook for
Selecting roses" from the ARS. If was introduced
in prior years it is probably listed with the year of
introduction.

detailed information see our most recent Newsletter.
DEER PROBLEM?
If you have a deer problem, then you will need to spray repellent as during the summer or get a longer acting, spreadable product, like Deer Scam that they deer shy away from. Most of our members us a product called Liquid Fences available at most garden and home supply stores.
